"You there! Line up with your Mark!"
— The unnamed gray Efrafan to Heather

The unnamed gray Efrafan is a minor but recurring character in the Watership Down TV series. He is a member of the Efrafan Owslafa and never appears again after A New World when he followed Moss, Heather, and the other former Efrafans to make a new warren.

TV series[]

Season 1[]

In The Shadow of Efrafa, he is seen guarding Blackavar and Primrose (and later Hazel and Fiver too) in the prison burrow. He is the one to roll aside the boulder blocking the prison exit. Later, he tries to kill Hazel on Woundwort's orders. Along with the other guards, Woundwort sends him away when Fiver has a vision.

In The Challenge to Efrafa, he is pictured supervising Primrose's Mark.

In Escape From Efrafa, he appears with Vervain on the stone bridge. He runs away when Kehaar attacks them. Later, he is seen guarding the entrance to Primrose's Mark tunnel. He is one of the rabbits who arrests Bigwig with Vervain and later stops Bigwig from trying to kill Vervain. At the end of the episode, Bigwig fights him and knocks him over while leading Primrose and Blackavar to freedom. He is part of the patrol that chases the escapees to the river.

In Kidnapped, he is present when Vervain and Woundwort question Campion about his meeting with the outsiders. Later, he is part of the ambush Vervain leads to make the outsiders think that Campion has switched sides. At the end of the episode, he, Vervain, and Moss kidnap Pipkin and bring him to Efrafa.

Season 2[]

In Prisoner of Efrafa, he is seen sparring with Woundwort. He is one of the Efrafans present at the prisoner exchange, and falls into a ditch dug by the Watership rabbits and their friends.

In The Stand, he is part of Woundwort's army that goes to attack Redstone.

In The Great Game, he and Moss are seen guarding Campion and bringing him to Vervain for questioning. At the end of the episode, he is shown guarding the slaves, along with Moss and some other Owsla.

In The Homecoming, he and Moss are again seen supervising the slaves. He attempts to track down an escaped Vervain, though without success. He later helps Moss and Campion recapture Vervain, and is seen keeping Vervain under guard. While not directly shown, he is implied to be part of the army that attacks the caverns, because he is present there in the beginning of the next episode.

Season 3[]

In The Last Battle, he is one of the few Efrafans to survive the collapsing tunnel. He is later seen supervising a Mark at silflay, and yells at Heather to line up with her Mark. While not directly shown, it is implied that he surrendered to Hazel's forces after Woundwort's presumed death.

In A New World, he is shown to be living on Watership Down, but failing to adjust to the new setting. He and two other Efrafans try to bully Pipkin out of his food, and they get into a fight with Bigwig when he tries to stop them. However, the three of them leave Bigwig and Pipkin alone when Moss intervenes and orders them to. Later, he is seen listening to Moss talk about finding another warren elsewhere and leave their past behind. At the end of the episode, he leaves Watership Down to follow Moss.

Differences between seasons[]

In season 3, the unnamed Efrafan became lighter in colour than in seasons 1 and 2, making his cheek scar more noticeable. His eyes also changed from blue to green.

Trivia[]

  • Since he is the one Bigwig knocks over in order to escape in Escape From Efrafa, it is possible that this rabbit is meant to represent Bartsia.
  • It's possible he is voiced by Stephen Mangan in season 3.
