The Shadow of Efrafa is the fifth episode of Season 1.
Plot synopsis[]
Hazel, Fiver and Bigwig decide to visit Efrafa, after hearing reports that Efrafa wants to kill all outsiders. Hazel encounters General Woundwort and asks him a few questions, Unaware Woundwort is set out to kill him. Hazel falls in love for a rabbit called Primrose. After Fiver has a vision about Woundwort's past (which is unlike any vision he's had before), they escape, having made a new enemy. Hazel promises himself he will come back for Primrose to set her free.
Plot[]
Blackavar hiding.
The episode opens with Blackavar running from Vervain and Campion, Kehaar takes notice of this and goes to inspect. While Blackavar hides behind a tree, Vervain and Campion try and get him to get out. Blackavar gets scared by Kehaar and bumps into Vervain, with Campion telling Blackavar it's over before taking the latter back to Efrafa.
Hazel is seen inspecting the walls of the Down, when Hazel walks away, saying they're just sitting around, Bigwig asks what his problem is, Dandelion tells him he's thinking again with Hawkbit remarking Hazel does too much of that. Hazel asks what's keeping Kehaar. When Bigwig complains about sending Kehaar to scout around Efrafa, Hazel asks Bigwig if he'd rather go back to Cowslip's warren with Bigwig replying not in his life.
When Bigwig says they live for war and that General Woundwort could tear Hazel to bits if he wanted, Hazel asks Bigwig if he lived there, wouldn't HE want to get out before walking off. Bigwig remarks to Fiver that his older brother's always thinking.
Primrose bows to General Woundwort.
Meanwhile Kehaar is at Efrafa, watching a trial with Blackavar. When General Woundwort appears, everyone bows. General Woundwort asks what Blackavar did with Vervain replying that Blackavar had attempted to escape. After learning of it, Woundwort says that Blackavar's sentence is death.
After hearing of it being death, Primrose objects, angering Woundwort just for Campion to jump in and tell Woundwort that in ancient laws of Efrafa, anyone who wants to be a defender is allowed. Primrose says she'll speak for Blackavar. She is cut off by Kehaar swooping in and attacking Vervain, sending the latter flying to the ground and causing chaos in the meeting. Seeing an opportunity, Primrose changes what she was originally saying to tell Woundwort that like everyone else, he was running from the gull.
General Woundwort decides to spare Blackavar before returning to his burrow. Primrose thanks Campion with Campion telling Primrose to watch herself before leaving. Back at the Down, Kehaar tells the story of how he attacked the Efrafans at a meeting. Hazel decides to go to Efrafa before the latter goes for them. Hazel, Bigwig, Fiver and Kehaar later set off to go to Efrafa, leaving the others at the Down.
Later by night, Fiver asks Kehaar if they're there yet.
