Near the end of the book, when Hazel sets Bob loose but is ambushed by the cat and subsequently saved by Lucy, Mr. Cane tells Lucy that she can't keep a wild rabbit. When Mr. Cane says that she should have just let the cat kill Hazel, Lucy begins to cry and says she only wanted to show the rabbit to Doctor Adams, and Mr. Cane relents. He then leaves to go to Newbury for the morning.
