Laurel was the mother of General Woundwort. She is not named in the book, but is called Laurel in the TV series.
Background (book)[]
She lived in a burrow outside a cottage garden near Cole Henley, where she gave birth to Woundwort, who was the strongest in a litter of five. Her mate was shot by a man while raiding a the cottage garden one morning. That same morning, the man dug out the doe and her growing litter. Woundwort's mother escaped with a wound from a shotgun pellet. Her kittens tried to follow her, but all except Woundwort fell behind. Soon, a weasel found them and killed Woundwort's mother. Woundwort was later found by a schoolmaster.
TV series[]
She is a minor character in the Watership Down TV series. She appears in the episodes The Shadow of Efrafa and Prisoner of Efrafa in flashbacks, where she and a younger Woundwort are confronted by a weasel. She smiles reassuringly at Woundwort before leaping at the weasel and fighting the weasel until she dies.
Although her mate Hemlock is mentioned by the Speaker of the Past in Darkhaven, she is not mentioned once in Season 3.
