Katerina is a rude gull who was once Kehaar's love until he discovered how cruel she really is.
Personality[]
Like many other gulls in the Big Water, Katerina is very rude and egotistical, and takes pleasure in bullying the puffins. She is also disagreeable as shown when she disapproved of Kehaar's friendship with the rabbits from Watership Down.
TV Series[]
Before the events of the series, Katerina and Kehaar were once mates during the time he lived at the big water, doing the usual gull things together: eating, playing the "puffin game", etc. But once Kehaar left the big water and found himself stuck inland, the two haven’t seen each other since.
The Market[]
First mentioned in the third episode of season 2, Katerina is one of the reasons why Kehaar wants to return to the big water. When the rabbits agree to help him get back there, Kehaar is ecstatic about reuniting with his mate.
The Great Water[]
One day, while sitting on a rock ledge overlooking the big water, she hears her name being called out. Upon realizing Kehaar has returned, both happily reunite and fly with each other. Kehaar tells her all about Watership Down and the rabbits and would like her to move there with him. Upon hearing the idea, she finds it preposterous and tells him to not be crazy, before noticing a fishing trawler close by. Seeing a chance for easy food, she quickly flies off towards it, leaving Kehaar behind.
Later, Katerina is seen fighting another gull, a friend named Kaka, over a fish. She stops fighting with Kaka once she sees Kehaar bringing a much larger fish. She immediately takes it away from him and starts eating it. Kehaar stands in front, expecting her to share it. Katerina simply states that if he doesn’t fight for his share, he doesn’t get his share, and proceeds to laugh at him with Kaka.
Later on, Kaka invites her to go raid the puffins, which she happily accepts, stating how he knows her well. When Kehaar inquires about the attack, she reminds Kehaar he enjoyed the “puffin game”, to which he responds he’s learned it’s better to get along with neighbors. Katerina, disapproving of his reasoning, stating she doesn’t know what’s up with him anymore. Upon reaching the puffin colony, she begins to attack the nesting ground as Kaka fights off Cahloki. The puffins manage to fend her off. As she regroups with Kaka, but are surprised by Kehaar coming in to defend them. Katerina tries to go in for a second run but is quickly intercepted by Kehaar, who demands she and Kaka leave. Realizing Kehaar is no longer the same gull she once knew, she angrily denounces her love for him before flying back to the colony with Kaka.
That night, Katerina and Kaka, who she has now apparently taken as her mate, are approached by Kehaar, who asks them to help save his rabbit friend. She inquires as to why they should, to which Kehaar explains that they are their friends. She simply retorts they are simply not her friends, and that it’s their fault for coming to the big water. This final act of cruelty is what pushes it for Kehaar, who states that her heart is simply too hard to enjoy anything good in life, before leaving his two “friends” behind. Unphased, Katerina once again states that he was always crazy, but “now he’s really crazy.”
It is unknown what happens to Katerina afterwards, but it’s likely she is still living in the big water with the other gulls.
