Watership Down Wiki

Kaka is a character that resides in the big water, who first appeared in the season 2 episode The Great Water. He is a large gull who is a friend of Katerina and (formerly) of Kehaar. By the end of the episode, it is implied that he has taken Kehaar's place as Katerina's mate.

Personality[]

Like many other gulls in the Big Water, Kaka is very rude and egotistical, and takes pleasure in bullying the puffins. He does not care for what Kehaar thinks and cares very little for his friendship with the rabbits from Watership Down.

TV series[]

Not much is known about Kaka, but it's likely he was one of Kehaar's many friends during the time he lived at the big water.

The Great Water[]

Kaka is first seen fighting Katerina over a fish. This fighting stops once Kehaar brings her a much larger fish, which she immediately takes away from him. Upon learning Kehaar intended to share the fish, Kaka mocks him, telling him to go back to the high hills and the rabbits, both laughing at the poor gull. Later at dusk, after eating a fish, Kaka invites Katerina to raid and destroy the puffins' nests with him. Katerina happily accepts, stating that he knows her well. When Kehaar protests against this idea, he just turns to Katerina, looking annoyed, as Katerina laments that she doesn’t know what’s with Kehaar anymore.

The two gulls quickly begin their attack, with Kaka taking on Calohki midair as Katerina goes after the nests. Calohki is able to force him back by ripping some of Kaka’s feathers out. Before they can fully regroup, Kehaar arrives and angrily defends the puffins from the two gulls, demanding they leave. Realizing their fun has been ruined, he flies back to the colony with Katerina.

That night, Kaka and Katerina, who has apparently become the latter’s new mate, are approached by Kehaar, who asks them to help save his rabbit friends. He retorts that they did nothing for them, and questions why the rabbits even came to the big water. Fed up with the ego of his fellow gulls, Kehaar takes his leave. Mildly annoyed, Kaka looks towards Katerina, who states that Kehaar was always crazy, but “now he’s really crazy.”

It is unknown what happens to Kaka afterwards, but it’s likely he is still living in the big water with the other gulls.
