Watership Down Wiki

Every rabbit should be in a warm burrow, tonight of all nights. You'll stay with me. Come on!
―Buttercup

Buttercup is Chief Rabbit of her warren, which is located on the grounds of a mansion. She only appears in Winter On Watership Down.

Personality[]

Buttercup is a friendly but stern rabbit. When she discovers Hazel, Bigwig, Fiver, Hawkbit and Dandelion lost in the mansion's grounds, she immediately invites them into her warren, saying that every rabbit deserves a warm burrow on Frith's Eve. She happily shares the warren's stock of flayrah with the Watership rabbits, but is disappointed when they steal flayrah and attempt to flee despite her kindness.

She lives close to man and thus has a different opinion of them compared to the Watership rabbits. She has a more optimistic view on them, as they have always been kind to her warren.

Biography[]

TV series[]

Winter on Watership Down, Part 1[]

Buttercup is first introduced when she spots the lost Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Dandelion, and Hawkbit at one of the mansion's windows. She introduces herself and adds that they look cold and should be in a burrow tonight of all nights because it’s Frith’s Eve. She then invites them to her warren where they can stay for the night.

She takes them into a maze in which her warren is hidden. She tells them to stay close because or else they could get. Hawkbit asks what a maze is, and she replies that it is “something that is easy to get lost in."

Winter on Watership Down, Part 2[]

She leads them through the maze and arrives at a hole under a Christmas tree. They all go inside and Buttercup invites Bigwig to rest on a pile of leaves. Once settled, she shows Fiver and Hazel the stock pile of food she has for Frith’s Eve, then invites them to help her gather more food. She leads them, along with Hawkbit and Dandelion, outside to a pile of Flayrah. They find a deer there as well, and though the Watership rabbits are surprised, Buttercup dismisses the deer as a friend. At one point, she mentions that the food is left out by humans, and the Watership rabbits demand that she lead them back to their friends to leave. Buttercup is confused as to why they are so disgusted and afraid.

After finding out Buttercup and her warren lives near man, Hazel's group is unconvinced that Buttercup's warren is safe due to their past experiences with warrens like the Shining Wire. Hazel and his friends decide to flee from there during the night while swiping the warren's flayrah for themselves, shocking Buttercup. The rabbits soon find out that, with the exception of a fox lurking nearby, Buttercup's warren is harmless and that the men that live nearby are harmless too. Buttercup also has an argument with Bigwig about how while some humans are a threat to rabbits, not all of them are. Buttercup lets them take as much food as they want and Kehaar leads them back home safely to Watership Down.
